Greater Quality, Safety and Shorter Patient Wait Times in Mexico City

The implementation of ehCOS technology is helping to improve patient care

Greater Quality, Safety and Shorter Patient Wait Times in Mexico City

It is important to have a tool that allows the exchange of relevant patient information.

The implementation of the Hospital Administration and Medical Information System (SAMIH, for its Spanish initials) in the 30 hospitals in the Mexican capital has greatly benefited patients and the care of their health, reducing waiting times and increasing the quality of their care.

  • Reduction of up to 40% in the wait times for patients to be attended to in an outpatient clinic. Thanks to the comprehensive patient management system embedded in the Digital Calendar, it is easy for administrative personnel to schedule appointments for specific hours, avoiding long waits for patients and considerably reducing waiting lings in the hospitals within the network. According to a survey conducted in a group of hospitals that  have implemented this system, 64% of SAMIH users are aware of the speed that is currently being achieved in patient care.
  • Reassigning patients quickly and easily. One of the most useful system features is the bulk rescheduling tool that lets you reassign patients to another doctor’s office when their doctor is not available that day. This avoids patients from having to wait for hours to be attended when to go to   their appointments, since this function automatically assigns them to another doctor’s office.
  • This avoids patients from having to wait for hours to be attended when to go to   their appointments, since this function automatically assigns them to another doctor’s office. SAMIH has been able to reduce the average waiting time between the request and the completion of elective surgery to 5.4 days. Since its implementation, the waiting time for patients has reduced by one day, which represents a significant change in terms of increased quality of care.
  • 7.9% reduction in the number of patients waiting more than 7 days for their surgery.

Ensuring Efficient Continued Medical Care for 4 Million Patients

Fourteen out of every one thousand Mexicans change residence each year, so there is an evident need for a tool to concentrate, exchange and communicate relevant patient information throughout their lifetime in the Electronic Health Record.

Moving from paper-based Health Records to electronic ones has brought enormous benefits to health professionals in Mexico City. The interoperability of patient health data throughout the entire network of hospitals now enables the consultation of patient information (diagnoses, treatment and testing) from any of the network hospitals at any time of the day. In addition the availability of this information enables safer and more accurate diagnoses and prescriptions, promoting greater quality of  care.

The implementation of the Electronic Health Record in Mexico City facilitates the referral and counter referral medical-administrative procedures between healthcare facilities at all three levels of care. The new streamlined referral  process improves the transfer, reception and return of patients, providing continued, comprehensive and quality medical care.
